Craig Reynolds was PLAY’s top bmx racer and this was one of his two pro-model tees. In case you hadn’t figured it out already, his racing number was 44. This design was printed on front and back of the tee. Artwork by Steve Buddendeck. His other tee was the lipstick model.
This is a drawing that Steve Crandall did one day when he was visiting the PLAY house in Winston-Salem in 1997. It portrays my two cats, Binky and Scamper, the best cats in the whole world. Crandall captioned it “Binky and Scamper are nice cats”. I got Binky and Scamper wh
Vaun Stout was a Play team rider and had his own pro model tee. On the front was a smiley face that said “Nice Guy Vaun Stout”. The artwork on the back of the shirt (shown above) was done by Chris Hargrave and it shows Vaun doing one of his signature sketchy landings where
I think Steve Buddendeck came up with this artwork. It may have been secretly inspired by Dan Duckworth himself (the original owner of Dan’s Competition and a fantastic moustache) just to see if he would stock it in his shop. This shirt was released around 1996.
The PLAY Clothes Goober tee shirt was inspired by those cheesy 70’s skateboarding and bmx stickers. I don’t know where we came up with the name goober, he just kinda looked like one. 1996
I designed a few dresses for PLAY over the years but never sold many. This is one of those designs being modeled by my ex-girlfriend Amy Parker in 1996. Trivia: Amy had a pic in the Cookbook (jokes hurt!)
Camel cigarettes are made in Winston-Salem, NC and that’s where we were living we made this shirt. It has a rip of the camel (please don’t sue us) with the word PLAY on it and says “Camel City North Carolina” beneath. Leif Valin is shown here wearing it in 1996
We named this the Cheap Play Shirt because we designed it to be as cheap as possible to make. One color print on one side of a white shirt. People still bought it!
Hal B pictured wearing a PLAY oval logo tee shirt in 1996 (with Play knit hat). Trivia: the pic appeared in a giveaway ad in Ride Magazine saying “Hal Brindley will give you the shirt off his back”. Photo by Steve Buddendeck.
The “Metal” logo was designed by our friend Bog and was only available on black. This pic shows Hal B wearing Metal tee (with Leigh) in front of their house in Winston-Salem NC 1996.
